Herb Pots That Will Brighten Your Day

"Oh Happy Day" herb pots

Chalkboard flower pots are such a cute way to show a little individuality this planting season. The best thing is they’re easy to make and a great money saver compared to purchasing predesigned varieties.

In the south the gospel song, “Oh Happy Day” is as familiar as the aroma of fresh baked cornbread in Grandma’s kitchen. I placed my herb pots in a kitchen window and “Oh Happy Day” brings a smile to my face every time I walk in the room.

Be creative! If “Oh Happy Day” doesn’t do it for you, pick another inspirational or funny phrase that will lift your spirits whenever you glance at it. You can write a short phrase on one large pot or use several small pots to spell out one word.

A few fun examples:

“Water Me!”

“You Grow Girls”

“Garden of Weedin”

“Grown with Love”

“Bloom, damn it!

“Live for Today”

“Bah humbug!”

Of course there are many more, so have fun choosing your favorite.

I buy flower pots and planters at my local hardware store. You’ll find a whole host to choose from but for this craft project, unfinished clay pots work best.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Clay flower pot (used three 8-inch herb pots)

1 can of ultra-flat black spray paint

1 acrylic paint pen (white or pastel colored)

Newspaper or drop cloth for easy clean-up

Go for ultra-flat black spary paint instead of chalkboard: It’s nearly impossible to tell the difference and you’ll have a few extra dollars in your pocket to buy seeds.

Lay out newspaper or lawn bags (staked into the ground to stay put) before spray painting.

Allow to dry 24 hours then draw your choice of word(s) on each pot in pencil. Don't worry if it's not perfect, you can always erase. Not to mention, the goal isn't to make this appear factory-made, a certain rusticity will give your pots character.

How easy was that? Once the acrylic paint pen work is dry add your favorite herb or flower with good potting mix and pop it in a sunny window or covered porch. You'll be the envy of your friends and neighbors!
