DIY Style - Sharpie Sneakers

My daughter is a doodler -- you know, one of those kids whose entire collection of school notebooks and folders is covered in swirls and squiggly lines. I love it!

She's an excellent student who works super hard, so if drawing relaxes her while her teachers drone on, I say, why not?

That said, there’s a time and place for everything, so these sneakers were decorated at home.

This makes a great family project for the weekend before school starts or anytime. It's also great for boys who like Vans-style sneakers -- purchase them in white or light blue, then draw abstract surf- or skateboard-style designs.

Take $5 plain white Target or Walmart tennis shoes to the next level just in time for back to school. Every girl loves to save money, but the best part is your sneaker style will be totally you: unique, fun and beautiful!

You'll need:

Plain white sneakers (lace up or slip on)

Your favorite color combination of very fine Sharpies (or other permanent markers)

Directions:

Plot out your design on paper first. This will prevent the hassle of scrapping your project and starting over because your design is too complicated to execute or you simply don’t like it. Look around online at websites for TOMS, Keds, Kenneth Cole and other brand-name shoes -- don't copy, just get inspired by great design. You can also get amazing ideas by looking at photographs of beautiful destinations and art, as well as drawing from your own experience.

Finally, it’s time to get started on your own piece of art.

Start on the instep of the shoe to get your bearings. That way, if you make a mistake it will be less noticeable.

No matter what, keep going! Mistakes are just quirky reminders that you're cool enough to design your own sneakers.

We plan to try this again using themes. We're thinking Christmas and Fourth of July would be really fun.
